Tis the Season

Pet gift guide to help with the purrfect present

By JANE PETERSON ,
Of The Oakland Press

Many people consider their pets part of the family. According to a survey of 724 pet owners by Pet Supplies "Plus," based in Farmington Hills, 96 percent said they will be buying gifts for their four-footed friends this holiday season.

As you make out your holiday gift lists, make sure you're checking them twice, just like the Christmas carol advises. After all, you don't want to accidently forget about anyone - including the family pet.

Many people consider their pets part of the family and reward their never-ending loyalty with a special gift during the holidays. According to a survey of 724 pet owners by Pet Supplies "Plus," which is based in Farmington Hills, 96 percent said they will be buying gifts for their four-footed friends this holiday season. The same survey also discovered that people will be buying on average 5.1 gifts for each of their pets, spending $55.12 per animal.

This comes as no surprise to local pet professionals.

Holiday treats, toys and clothing are popular gifts for pets, says Marcie Theisen, owner of Bow Meow in Royal Oak. Christmas, Hanukkah and winter-themed shaped treats like snowflakes, snowmen, candy canes, stockings, the Star of David and Christmas trees are practical gift items that pets love, she said.

Some people make their own stocking for their pet, tucking in a variety of toys and treats, Theisen added.

Patty Livernois, who co-owns The Uppity Puppy in Royal Oak with Kim O'Brien, said toys, feeding bowls and carriers always make nice pet gifts this time of year as do holiday treats made just for pets.

Gift certificates are also good sellers as many recipients use these to purchase new pet clothing to make sure it is properly fitted, she said.

Pets Supplies "Plus" merchandising buyers report that felt and corduroy stuffed stockings that hang on the mantel will be a big hit with pets this holiday season as well as stuffed rawhide bones and mammoth bones for dogs and practical clothing items to keep pets warm and comfortable this winter like coats and booties.

For the cat on your list, Pet Supplies "Plus" officials suggest interactive cat toys, catnip and treats.

Here's some other ideas for the pets on your gift list:
