Animal lovers cook up some tasty treats for humane society

This time of the year many people head into the kitchen to whip up some tasty treats. They may share their baked goods with their neighbors, bring some in for their co-workers or delight their family with a special after-dinner treat.

The Animal Lovers Club at the Inn of Cass Lake recently baked up a storm for some of their friends - the four-legged variety, that is. The seniors made doggie cookies for the pups waiting to be adopted at the Michigan Humane Society (MHS).

The residents had a good time mixing and shaping the cookie dough into dog bones, doghouses and other pet-related shapes. They used the stove in the activity room to bake the treats, said Julie L. Turnes, life enrichment coordinator for the Inn at Cass Lake.

By the time they were finished, they had packaged eight dozen of the special dog cookies. The club then visited the MHS Rochester Hills Center for Animal Care on Oct. 3 to deliver their homemade goodies. During their visit, club members enjoyed spending time with the cats, kittens, puppies and dog in need of homes.

"We want to help out in any way we can," said Turnes.

Michigan Humane Society representatives said the organization is very appreciative of all the resident's efforts, as the cookies are much appreciated by all the animals.

This isn't the first time Animal Lovers Club members have shared their time and talents for their furry friends at MHS. Earlier this year, they created several kitty forts to help cats feel comfortable and secure while waiting to be adopted. They also created warm doggie sweaters. The group looks forward to the next endeavor, said Turnes.
