The Michigan Animal Rescue League is hoping people can "spare" some time and money Nov. 2 in order to support the shelter and its programs.

MARL will host its second annual Mutt Madness Cat and Dog Bowl from 7-10 p.m. Nov. 2 at Thunderbird Lanes in Troy.

The event is an effort to raise funds for MARL and its programs, such as its Community Connection outreach program that offers food, straw and sterilization services for pets of low-income individuals.

Last year's event raised $32,000, thanks to the 250 bowlers who collected pledges, said Kayla Allen, shelter director.

"We packed the bowling alley," she said about last year's event. "We couldn't have dreamed of a better inaugural event."

For a $30 entry fee, Mutt Madness participants will enjoy three games (shoes included), pizza and a beverage. Those who provide a minimum $250 pledge will receive an official Mutt Madness Dog and Cat Bowl T-shirt.

The event should be a lot of fun, said Allen. Many participate as part of a group with friends, family members and co-workers. Individuals are also welcome to sign up and will be placed on a team, she said. The deadline to register is Friday.

"In desperate economic times, animals need us more than ever," said MARL staff member Amy Wettlaufer said in a news release. "We are a safe place for animals to settle between former and future homes. We value greatly each and every animal in our care, and we want to continue to provide them with all the comfort and love possible."

Those who can't attend the Mutt Madness Cat and Dog Bowl can make donations directly to MARL.
