The Detroit Zoo and the Michigan Humane Society, in collaboration with local animal welfare organizations, will host "Meet Your Best Friend at the Zoo" from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Sept. 23 and 24 under tents in the zoo's front parking lot. There is no charge for admission to the event or parking. Adoption fees and policies are set by each participating group. A get-acquainted area will provide guests an opportunity to spend time with an animal before adopting. Because puppies are often in high demand, "puppy passes" will be given each morning to the first 25 adoption event guests who are looking to adopt a puppy. For more information, call 1-866-MHUMANE or visit www.michiganhumane.org.
Re/Max Professional is holding their 2nd annual Adopt a Pet Open House from 1-4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 24. Re/Max Professional is located at 1415 Walton Blvd. in Rochester Hills, (just W. of Livernois and next to Rochester High School). If you cannot adopt a pet at this time but want to help, donations to Michigan Animal Rescue are welcome, and include the following: dog and cat food, cages, collars and leashes, cat litter, paper towels and toilet paper, hand sanitizer and gas cards. For details, call (248) 650-2100.

The Michigan Humane Society will present its inaugural Mega March for Animals Oct. 8. The two-mile walk will begin at Hart Plaza and proceed up Woodward Avenue. Registration will begin at 9 a.m. and the walk will start at 10 a.m. Individual walkers, small groups and corporate walking teams are welcome to participate, with or without their four-legged friends. Proceeds will allow the Michigan Humane Society to continue expanding its services benefiting the animals and people of metro Detroit and beyond. Participants can support the Michigan Humane Society's mission by simply walking or by walking and raising donations for their participation. No pre-registration is required. Walkers can collect donations by cash, check or by using the Michigan Humane Society's online fundraising tools. The Web site, www.michiganhumane.org, allows people to create a Mega March for Animals personalized fundraising page, set a fundraising goal, and electronically invite friends, family and colleagues to join their walking team or donate securely online in support of their walk.
