Keeping cats healthy

There's only a few weekends of summer left and if you have children, chances are they are getting ready to go back to school.
While you're making appointments with the family doctor and dentist before the school year gets underway, make one for your cat as well.
Ron Isaacson, D.V.M. at Madison Veterinary Hospital in Madison Heights, said he likes to see cats twice a year, in the spring and the fall, for wellness exams.
It's important to get your cat in to see a veterinarian because cats tend to hide their illnesses better than other animals, like dogs, said Isaacson. In addition to checking for fleas and heartworm disease, veterinarians can check for other illnesses such as cat leukemia and cat distemper, he said.
It's also a good opportunity to discuss a vaccination schedule and any other concerns you have about your cat's health.
Isaacson said one year in your life is like six to eight for a cat, so prevention is key to keeping these loving pets happy and healthy.
