Pretty Pets: The latest trends in pet grooming

By JANE PETERSON ,

Most pet owners realize that grooming is an important part of pet care.

Every morning you get up, take a shower, brush your teeth and comb your hair. These are fairly easy tasks that you do in order to keep yourself healthy and looking good.

Your pet needs the same attention, but unfortunately, he can't take of routine grooming tasks himself.

Most pet owners realize that grooming is an important part of pet care. Just like people, dogs and cats need their teeth brushed, nails trimmed, ears cleaned and skin washed.

According to Judy Newman, co-owner of Judy and Michelle Happy Tails Pet Salon in Waterford, a bath and haircut are among the most popular of grooming services requested.

Many people take special care of their pets because they are beloved members of their family.

Beyond the basic bath, pet owners have a number of options to choose from that are designed to pamper their pet and protect their health. One of these options are luxurious shampoos, said Debbie Neil, owner of Posh Pets Salon in Farmington. She described an oatmeal shampoo that works exceptionally well on dog skin problems. She uses an oatmeal shampoo that is cold-processed, so the vitamins are retained in the formula.

At The Uppity Puppy in Royal Oak, the store's own line of shampoo is popular, said Patty Livernois, who owns the shop with Kim O'Brien. Customers can either give their dogs a bath themselves or take the shampoo to their groomer to use, she said.

The shampoo is made with hemp oil and whole leaf aloe vera and grown hydroponically without herbicides or pesticides, resulting in soft and silky hair, said Livernois.

After the bath, you can pamper your pet even further.

Hooded towels and luxurious robes are made just for pets, said Livernois

. Other bath helpers like bath mitts are also available at The Uppity Puppy.

Some pet parents also add a bow or bandana after the bath for a special touch, said Neil.

Barrettes and sparkly collars made specifically for dogs are popular choices as well, according to Livernois.

Many people take special care of their pets because they are beloved members of their household, Neil added.

In addition to keeping dogs and cats clean and smelling fresh, by taking care of the pet's hygiene needs, owners are also taking good care of their health. For example, getting the ears cleaned can help prevent an infection, said Neil.

And don't forget that routine dental care is essential to a pet's overall health as well.
