The Michigan Humane Society will once again offer its 18th annual "Protect-A-Pet" vaccination clinics this spring and summer. The first will be located in the Hazel Park/Ferndale area at Hazel Park DPW yard from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. March 29. All animals must be on leashes or in carriers. The event will include combination vaccinations protecting against Distemper, Hepatitis, Leptospirosis, Parainfluenza and Parvovirus for dogs over six weeks of age; combination vaccinations protecting against Rhinotracheitis, Calici and Panleukopenia for cats over six weeks of age; and rabies vaccinations for dogs and cats over four months of age. The Michigan Humane Society Rochester Hills Center For Animal Care will host "Pet Projects," a program that gives children ages 7 to 13 the opportunity to help the animals in their community, from 3-5 p.m. Feb. 16 at the facility, 3600 W. Auburn Road. "Pet Projects" participants, accompanied by their parent/guardian, will have the opportunity to help in many ways, including: Making kitty forts, brightly colored and decorated cardboard boxes that help alleviate stress and keep cats happy while searching for their new forever homes; Snuggle Blankets, soft, hand-made blankets that provide a sense of security and familiarity for the animals while looking for their forever home; and Pupsicles, a yummy treat for pups of all ages, made with dog food and treats. "Pawsitive Start," a free seminar for all dog guardians presented by the Michigan Humane Society Pet Education Center, will be Feb. 25 from 7-8:30 p.m. at the Michigan Humane Society Rochester Hills Center for Animal Care. No preregistration is needed. Pawsitive Start seminars are for humans only - please leave dogs at home. Everyone who would like to improve his or her dog's house manners is welcome to attend. Therapy Dogs and their handlers provide comfort and care. They are usually seen walking the halls of hospitals, nursing homes, and other institutions, offering a spark in an otherwise sterile environment. Dogs are also used in libraries and classrooms to encourage and motivate students. Trainers Academy, LLC is presenting a seminar to inform people what Therapy Dogs can do and how they can get their dog involved at 7 p.m. April 7 at its facility,1016 Troy Ct., Troy. The cost is free, but those who wish to attend are asked to RSVP by calling (248) 616-6500. Pets are not allowed at this seminar. This seminar will explain the Therapy Dog concept and the benefits provided by the Therapy Dogs. Presenters will explain what it takes to become a Therapy Team and demonstrate some of the elements of the Therapy Dog evaluation. Also discussed will be the wonderful volunteer activities that involve Therapy Dogs, such as reading programs, senior visits, and hospital visits.
